As I mentioned in the post, there’s a lot of chatter online about backlinks being the most most important ranking factor. In my experience, this is not always true. I’ve ranked plenty of websites on the first page of Google with on-page SEO alone and never building a single backlink to the ranking page.
But some competitive keywords will require a good backlink profile. However, your backlinks are not nearly as effective for increasing your rankings without first doing proper on-page optimization.
If you get your on-page SEO correct, then you can often rank on page one of Google with fewer backlinks.
