Hey everyone, in this video I'm going to talk about the difference between SEO and SMM
0:05
SEO stands for search engine optimization and SMM stands for social media marketing
0:12
And I wanted to cover this topic because it's pretty important and a lot of people kind of wonder which one should I focus on, should I focus on both, etc
0:19
And just generally what's the difference and how am I going to get value out of either one. So I recently wrote a blog post about this idea
0:26
you can check it out by going to the site seochatter.com and going to the blog or I'll put
0:31
a link in the description below for you to click on and easily get there. So I'm not going to go
0:36
through everything in this blog post. I encourage you to read it, but I will pull out the highlights so you can get some value out of this video so you can walk away knowing what the basic differences
0:44
are between SEO versus SMM. So we already covered what the terms mean, but basically
0:51
Essentially, search engine optimization is the process of increasing the quantity and
0:58
quality of traffic to your website. It can be done in several ways
1:03
The two primary ways are on-page optimization and off-page optimization. What that means is on-page optimization are things that you can do on your website, on
1:13
your web pages, to optimize them better for search engines so you can get more traffic
1:19
and rank for more keywords for your website. And there's different ways you can do this
1:23
I have other videos on the channel that give you specific tips on how to improve
1:28
your optimization, but a couple of the highlights include the meta title, so the page title of the page
1:34
you can put keywords in there. You can put keywords in your meta descriptions
1:40
and you can also put keywords in your URL. You have different headings on the page
1:44
which are called H1s to H2 to H6. You can also put keywords in your alt text for images
1:51
And you can do strategic internal linking on your site so that you can essentially take one page on your site
1:59
link it to another page, but use a keyword in that link, which sends a signal to Google and other search engines that, hey, this is what the page should be ranked for
2:07
And so there's just all these ways you can essentially optimize and manipulate your pages
2:11
so that they can send better signals to the search engines that, hey, rank me for these keywords
2:16
Don't just guess, rank me for these things. This is what I want you to rank for. So that's on-page optimization
2:22
The other one is off-page optimization, which is off-page SEO. And essentially what this means is it's doing optimization on other websites that are not your own
2:34
And you're using signals from those sites to build trust for your site
2:39
And what I mean by this is primarily when people talk about off-page SEO, they're talking about what's called backlinks
2:44
and a backlink is when a website links to your website and they use an anchor link
2:54
So for example, when I do outreach for this blog, I'm going to try to get people to link
2:59
to my site with words like SEO news or SEO tips because what that doing is it telling Google when they crawl another site on the web and they linking to me with the words SEO news or SEO tips
3:11
that's sending a signal to them saying, hey, this is the type of content that's on the site. And so you should start to rank it for those keywords
3:18
because other people on the web are saying that this site is about it
3:22
So not only are my pages optimized for those keywords, but other people out on the internet are saying the same thing
3:28
And so it's just sending another signal to Google. And so that's very important and one of the strongest ranking factors in Google right now
3:35
And it has been ever since the inception of the search engine. Other ways to do off-page SEO are through social media posts
3:42
So you can share links to your content. Those are links that are pointing back to your site
3:46
You can do social bookmarking where you go to these different sites like StumbleUpon, ScoopIt, Dig, etc
3:53
And you essentially are just bookmarking your pages for people on those networks
3:58
And you can also go to like review sites. So if you have a local business, et cetera
4:03
you can go and have your site reviewed by other people and have links put back
4:07
to eventually show that this is a trustworthy site, it's valuable, et cetera
4:13
And then search engines will basically factor those reviews into your profile
4:18
and that can help you rank better. Those are just a couple of the ways. The next thing is we're gonna talk about
4:23
is social media marketing and the different types of that. So, social media marketing is essentially using social media platforms to market your business
4:32
You can do this by just doing free posts on these sites, or you can even do paid advertisements
4:37
It's up to you, but you're using those channels to market your business. And there's a couple ways that you can do that, primarily just through social networking
4:46
Think Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn. Those are places where you post and share content, especially links to your articles
4:55
You can do image sharing sites like Instagram, Snapchat, or Pinterest where they're primarily
5:00
just images. And so you post images, but then you link back to your content that way
5:04
Video sharing sites like YouTube, Vimeo, and Dailymotion, those places you're creating
5:10
videos like this one to create valuable content for the user. So you're promoting your brand and you can even link back to your site that way
5:18
And then social blogging. So, you know, sites like Medium and Tumblr where you're just using those channels to create blog content that promotes your brand and gets people back to your site in different ways where you're just, you know, trying to capitalize on additional places online that you can share your content, all pointing them back to your brand and to your website to hopefully get more traffic, leads, and sales
5:43
what I want to now go over is just a couple of statistics from each one SEO versus SMM just so
5:52
you can see the value of each of them one of the one result for SEO for using SEO is that
5:59
49 of marketers they report that organic search has the best return on investment than any other marketing channel so that pay social media advertising etc anything else Marketers are finding 49 of their efforts are giving the better return on investment there
6:17
So SEO is a very valuable thing. And I talk a lot about that on this channel
6:21
So you can look at my other videos to see more information on that. And essentially, 53% of consumers say that they research products using a search engine
6:33
like Google before they decide to buy something or not. So if you focus on SEO and you can get
6:39
your site ranked for certain keywords, you have a better chance of getting found and getting your
6:44
stuff sold because, you know, more than half of people that are looking to buy something are doing
6:49
research before they actually buy it. And then also just want to mention that this is a good one
6:56
Nearly 60% of the pages that rank in the top 10 Google results when you do a search are three or
7:03
more years old, according to Ahrefs. So think about that for a second. If a lot of the top
7:08
search results are three years old, that means if you're not already jumping on SEO, then you're a
7:13
little bit late in the game. But that doesn't mean you can't dominate. I mean, I've got new sites
7:18
I've ranked within a year where I've dominated the first pages of Google just because I know a lot
7:22
of optimization tips. But if you're not in doing SEO right now, then it's very important that you
7:27
get started because you can grab that top spot and you can essentially be there for a couple
7:32
years and keep returning the investment on your time and or if you outsource it. So it's very
7:38
important that you get SEO under your belt. Now, let's just go over a couple of statistics in
7:42
social media marketing. 54% of social browsers use social media to research products. So we just
7:52
talked about how many people use search engines to look for products before they buy them
7:57
while almost an even amount of people are also using social media to look for products
8:02
So that's important. So you want to make sure that if you are selling products
8:07
then you get your stuff on social media to take advantage of that. Link clicks account for 92% of all user actions on Twitter through tweets, according to HubSpot
8:20
So think about that for a second. A lot of people are clicking on links on Twitter
8:25
So if you're not using Twitter to market your content, then you could be missing out on that free traffic
8:32
And then 90% of people on Instagram, they follow a business. So if you do sell products or have a service, etc., Instagram may be a good channel for you
8:41
Because 90% of the people that are on the platform are following businesses
8:46
So they're not just out, they're just following their friends. So let that just be something that you might want to consider if you do have a business and you want to generate more sales and leads
8:56
And then 54% of people want marketers like you and I to put out more video content
9:05
And that's an excellent place to begin. So even I for example I creating this channel for you to watch these YouTube videos And the reason I doing that is because I know people like to learn this way I also write this blog SEOchatter And so I know some people like to just read blog
9:21
content, but as a marketer, I know 54% of people want me and you, et cetera, to create more video
9:28
content. And so that's what I'm doing. And I'm just getting started. You know, I'm getting it done
9:33
You know, it's something that I just decided this is important. That's what people want to see. So
9:37
You have to get out there. And there's been a lot of statistics saying that video is the future
9:41
Most people are just going to be watching videos, et cetera, et cetera. I don't think we're there yet
9:45
But, you know, it's just something that you just need to get comfortable with if you can
9:49
But if you can't, you can always outsource it too. I have some affiliate websites that I run and I outsource all the videos for that
9:57
I essentially went to Fiverr. I found a person that would be a spokesperson. And I pay them to be the one person talent like I'm doing here
10:05
And then I write the script. I sent it to them, they voice it, they act it out, et cetera. And then I put the video up and that
10:12
generates affiliate sales for me and leads people back to my website. And the reason why is because
10:17
I know people in my niches want video. Not everybody wants to read a blog post, you know
10:23
So on the, on the blog, um, I give a comparison table to make this a little bit easier for you
10:28
Um, I give all those statistics so they're, um, right there for you to read, but essentially
10:33
you know at the end of the day i feel like if you really want to get success in marketing you have
10:40
to focus on both seo and smm so while there are differences you know they can work in conjunction
10:47
with each other and by using them in the right way you can create more traffic for your business
10:52
and more brand recognition so it's just a smart move to focus on seo and smm versus just seo versus
11:00
SMM. Search engine optimization and social media marketing are just two powerful ways that you can
11:07
get free traffic and brand awareness to your site. But if you want to pay for that information
11:13
pay for those placements as well, you can do that through advertisements, through any of these
11:18
channels, you can do that too. But I'm a proponent of just using the free organic search traffic from
11:24
these two sources so that you can grow your business online. If you have any questions about
11:31
anything I mentioned here or the blog, be sure to leave a comment below and I'll try to respond
