Hey everyone, it's Steven with SEO Chatter, and in today's video, I'm going to talk about a blog post I wrote called
0:05
OnPage versus OffPage SEO. What is the difference? And this is a good video to cover because a lot of people are wondering that are new to marketing and search engine optimization is what is the difference between on page SEO and off page SEO
0:20
So I wanted to tackle this question and give you all the information so that you can walk away from this video and the blog post knowing the full differences so you know which one to focus
0:29
on if not both to help grow your website traffic and keyword rankings. So what I'm
0:36
going to do here is I'm going to pull some of the highlights out of the blog post so that you can leave this video with actionable tips knowing what you should do
0:43
moving forward but I highly encourage you to take a look at it to get the full
0:47
details on everything I'm talking about. So I'll leave a link in the description
0:52
below so that you can do that. So the first thing I want to talk about is what is on
0:59
page SEO. Essentially, on page SEO are the things that you can do on your website, on your
1:07
web pages to optimize it better for search engines so that you can rank higher for specific
1:13
keywords. And that's important because these are things that you control. You know, you can get your
1:21
site perfectly optimized for specific keywords in a way that will send signals to search engines
1:27
like Google, that this is what I want this page to rank for. And you can optimize, re-optimized
1:34
do it over and over again. You can continue to improve it over time. You can just keep tweaking
1:40
pages at your leisure to do a better job of on-page SEO to get the value out of those
1:46
So again, this is something you control. Now, when it comes to on-page SEO, what are the different
1:52
factors? Well, there's a lot of them, and I'm just going to cover a few of them here
1:56
which are the most important. But essentially, what this is talking about is the meta information
2:04
So when you do a search for any keyword, when a result pops up in Google, for example
2:11
you're going to see a title and then a description and a link for that result
2:16
And that's the meta information, essentially. And so that first thing, the link that you click on to go to the site, that's called the meta title
2:23
And so you can use that field to optimize your keywords so that you can rank higher
2:30
And that's actually one of the strongest places that you can optimize with one page SEO
2:35
to get your pages to rank high in Google. And the reason why is because that meta title is what displays in the search engine results
2:43
and you're telling Google, hey, that's what the page is about. So if you don't put a target keyword in there, then Google's not going to think that the page is about that
2:51
you know, so that's a place you really want to optimize. And I give you strategies for that in the blog post and throughout this channel and on other
2:58
posts on my site, SEOchatter.com. The next thing is the meta description
3:05
That's the little block of text that shows below the title and the search results
3:10
You can optimize there for clicks so that people are encouraged to go to your website as well
3:16
as put keywords in there. They may not necessarily be a ranking factor
3:21
according to experts, but it's still a place where you can get your keyword put in
3:26
There's different headings on the page, which are called H1 down to H6, and you can use those
3:32
as on-page optimization areas so that you can get your keywords placed in those locations
3:37
and strategic ways to help send more signals to Google that this is what this page should be
3:41
this page should be ranked about. I also talk about the page content, so the actual words on
3:47
the page That places you can do on SEO and how to get your page ranked higher by putting your keywords in specific places there I talk about structured data paid speed focusing on core web vitals so that your pages are
4:04
faster so they load quick for the user. That's now become a ranking factor in Google, so that's
4:12
something to improve upon, and it's something you can control. You can continue to make your
4:17
web pages faster, the more you work on them. And so that's basically the basic factors of one-page SEO
4:25
There's many more. But now let's move on to what is off-page SEO
4:30
Off-page SEO is when you do optimization on other people's websites, and you do different strategies that send signals to your site to help it rank for certain things
4:44
and to build your authority on certain topics. And that's important because Google
4:49
comes to your webpage and they may see the good on-page optimization saying I should, you know
4:54
rank this page for certain keywords. But that's just you saying it, you know, where other people
5:00
voting for you essentially or verifying that that's true? And so that's what off-page SEO does
5:06
is you can use other channels online, other websites, to basically create that trust saying that
5:13
hey, my website should rank for these things because other people are talking about it and they're
5:17
verifying that and they're saying that's true. And so the different types of off-page SEO you can
5:23
use, the most prominent one are called backlinks. And what that is is when you approach another
5:30
website owner and you ask them, hey, can I get a link on your site where you link back to me
5:37
Because that's basically creating a vote for your site. And the more sites you can get to link to you
5:42
those are more votes. And Google uses that as a ranking factor. And that's how the search engine
5:47
when the search engine was essentially built, was they found out that
5:53
hey, the more times this site's being referenced, the more valuable it is
5:58
and we should rank it higher for those keywords. Now, that's not the only ranking factor these days
6:02
because people have started to manipulate that, but it's still very important. So you can go out and you can ask people
6:08
for what's called a guest post, which is, hey, I like your site, we're in the same niche
6:13
can I write an article on your site? And then in that article
6:16
can I link back to my site as a resource? And a lot of people may say yes to that, you know
6:22
maybe for an exchange or for fee, et cetera. And then sometimes there's this thing called a link insertion
6:28
where you go to a website and you say, hey, I like your content, it's about X
6:35
And my site's about X. Can I get referenced in your article
6:39
so that people can go to my site from that link? And sometimes people will say yes to that
6:45
they may do it just because it's a good alignment with your brands or they may charge it for it
6:50
There's just different ways that's done. But those are essentially backlinks. Another way off-page SEO is done is through social shares, posting on social media
7:01
So you can go to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, any of the other ones
7:09
And you can post a link to your content and you can get a link back to your site
7:15
so that you can create more trust for your site, because if people are sharing it on social media
7:23
then it validates that, hey, this is actually good content that people like
7:27
And so there's been studies on both ends of the spectrum. Some say that social shares work for helping rankings
7:35
Some people say it doesn't. But at the end of the day, you never know when that's going to be a ranking factor if it is
7:40
So it something good to do for your off SEO ranking strategy Another thing is you can just get brand mentions which is off SEO so you don necessarily have to get a link to your site You can actually just get your brand name mentioned
7:56
There's probably going to come a day one year when backlinks aren't valued as highly as they
8:03
used to be. And they may Google Yahoo and Bang and whichever search engines may start to value just
8:11
brand mentions because that's that can't really be manipulated in the way that links can because
8:17
people exchange money and favors for links but just putting your brand name on a web page like hey
8:23
you know according to SEO chatter you know on page optimization is a powerful marketing strategy
8:29
if I get somebody to put that on their website and they don't even link to me I mean that's
8:34
kind of a valuable way to just build brand awareness and say hey they're actually being credited
8:39
without a link, you know, and so that's just another way to build your awareness
8:44
And you see that done all the time in, like, you know, popular news articles and magazines
8:49
etc. You know, they're really stringent on who they link to. But, you know, getting a brand mention in, like, Entrepreneur magazine and an article about
8:58
search engine optimization and me getting quoted would be great because they could say
9:02
Stephen Hockman from SEO chatter says XYZ. And somebody might think, oh, let me go look him up, you know, so it's good
9:09
for getting brand awareness as well as just kind of showing a signal to Google that
9:14
you know, this site is legit and they are experts on this topic. And I think, let me check
9:20
real quick, I think that there was a study done by Spark Toro. Let's see where I find it
9:29
They basically say that you can consider brand mentions for your business essentially inferred
9:36
links, which is what I was talking about. And he ran to
9:39
Fishkin kind of thinks that's probably going to be the future of ranking sites eventually
9:44
because, you know, there's going to come a point in time when maybe backlinks are devalued
9:49
to where it doesn't really matter anymore. But we're not there yet. Also, other things like domain
9:56
authority and page authority, what I mean by that is that there's just different things you can
10:03
do to boost your domain authority. So, for example, you know, a new website is going to have low
10:08
authority because it's brand new, doesn't have much trust, much age, versus a site that's
10:13
been around for 20 years. You know, if it's gone that long, it's just a stronger domain
10:19
And there's several off-page SEO factors that attest to that. So high domain authority is a combination of the age of the domain, the history of the domain
10:31
So has it changed hands a lot? Has it been owned by one person for all those years, et cetera
10:36
you know, that kind of shows kind of like a used car. You know, if a car keeps changing hands and it's had 10 owners
10:42
you're thinking there's something wrong with it. And then the number of links that link to the root domain of that site
10:50
so the more pages that link to your site, I'm sorry, the more domains out there
10:57
So if let's say I have 100 different sites linking to SEO chatter
11:01
that's going to send a stronger signal for my site than if I only had three sites linked
11:06
linking to me. And that's also the total number of links too. So let's say I have 100 sites linking
11:13
to me and each site links to me twice. You know, that's actually 200 links. So all that stuff
11:18
is factored into your domain authority. You know, so essentially the newer you are as a website
11:23
the less authority you have. But the older you are and the more relationships you build and links
11:28
you get the more stronger your domain becomes. And you see this impact in the search engines
11:34
because sometimes you'll see big brand names ranking for keywords and they don really do good on page SEO You know and you think why are they ranking number one when I got my on page SEO and point And a lot of times that because they just built such a strong domain over the years that you know they so trusted with their content
11:53
and people just love their stuff so much they get linked to that it just makes it easier for them
11:58
to rank for any keyword they want. People I see in MySpace like that are like Forbes magazine
12:04
spruce, Bob Vila, popular mechanics, etc. They just have this strong domain authority
12:14
so they're just picking off keywords and ranking left and right for most anything they write
12:19
So now the next question is, what's more important? One page SEO or off page SEO
12:26
Should you focus on one or the other or both? Well, as I explained the blog post
12:31
which I encourage you to read for the full details of all this stuff, is that they're both equally important, you know, but at the same time, on-page SEO doesn't work as well
12:42
without good off-page SEO signals. So I kind of mentioned that a little bit earlier, which was, you know, you could have great on-page
12:51
SEO, you could be a brand-new site, but you're not getting the rankings you need because
12:57
you don't have any off-page signals verifying that you're trustworthy and you should be ranked
13:02
for those things. So you need to do them in combination. You need to make sure that you have good on-page SEO
13:08
and then you've got to work on the off-page to get those links to your site and those brand mentions so that you can get trusted
13:14
and become valuable for the keywords you want. So at the end of the day, on-page SEO does have to come first, however
13:23
You need to focus on that first. You need to get your on-page SEO correctly, done correctly
13:28
which I explain in other videos and on the blog through the various
13:33
posts I put up. But once you get that done well, you actually don't have to rely on as much off-page
13:40
SEO, and that's just going to strengthen you. So let's say, for example, it's the reverse where you have
13:46
this page, you did no one-page optimization, and you're trying to rank for a keyword. But you have all
13:51
these off-page signals saying, hey, you should rank for this keyword. Well, that's a disconnect in the
13:55
eyes of Google. You know, that's like, hey, a lot of people say you should rank for this keyword
13:59
but you don't even mention it on the page. That just seems strange. Something
14:03
strange as going on here, that may be manipulation. But if your whole page is about that keyword and you've optimized it in the correct places
14:12
like I explained in my blog posts, then when you get those off page signals that verify that
14:18
that's a strong connection. It's like, hey, this is what it should be about
14:23
And so they're working in tandem. So you want to make sure you get your on-page SEO done correctly before you start doing the
14:29
off-page SEO. It's just going to make your life so much easier. and give you stronger rankings in the end
14:35
So that's just the highlight of the different information that this blog post talks about
14:40
If anything in this video didn't make sense or if you have any questions about what you read
14:44

15:06
and you can't sleep on one page or off page. You've got to do it well so that you can make things easier
15:11
while you're trying to market your business online. So I hope all this was valuable
