In this video, I'm going to talk about a recent blog post that I published called SEO Secrets
0:05
for Higher Google Rankings. The whole purpose of this blog post is to give you 33 different ways that you can improve
0:12
your content on your site so that you can get higher Google rankings without much effort
0:17
These are all strategies that I've been using myself to get my own content ranked high
0:22
including the SEO Chatter blog, as well as different affiliate sites that I own
0:26
I know that these tricks work. That's why I put them here and the whole goal is to just help you be able to rank your content
0:33
higher and make it easier to do so. So what I'm going to do here is I'm just going to talk about a few of the things, the
0:38
top secrets that I think are the best ones to give you some value in this video
0:42
And if you want to check them all out, then just make sure to visit the blog and read that post
0:46
I'll leave a link in the description below to make it easy for you to find that content
0:51
The first thing I want to talk about is essentially you want to select the right SEO keywords
0:57
And what I mean by this is that if you're a new site and you're trying to gain traction in Google, you really got to focus on certain keywords that you can easily win
1:05
And what I mean by this is that, for example, I use in the blog post that you can't just go after the word car insurance if you're a very new blog or website that talks about car insurance
1:15
And the reason why is because there's so many big brands out there that are spending tons of money to grab that keyword
1:22
They're doing that through advertisements. They probably have in-house SEO agencies. that specialists that helped them with that, etc
1:30
And they've probably had that keyword targeted and ranked for for a very long time
1:35
So trying to get something like that to rank for is just going to be very tough
1:39
And you're going to spend a lot of time and money just trying to do that. And you can get frustrated when you're trying to go after a term
1:45
that your site really isn't qualified for yet. So what I recommend in the blog post is that you want to do keyword research
1:51
and you want to find a keyword that you can more easily rank for
1:54
And what I suggest is when you're a new site, is to basically go for what's called long tail keywords
2:00
And those are keywords that are about four or five words long inside the search phrase
2:05
So, for example, you know, I did a little bit of research for this blog post, and I found a key term, how much car insurance do I need in Florida
2:13
And so that's something that you could easily target because that's very specific. It's to a specific state
2:19
And it's something that a lot of these bigger brands aren't really focusing on. They're focusing on the big key term, car insurance
2:25
How do I sell this? How do I get quotes? How do I get leads, et cetera, because they want to make money. But if you write a post about how much car insurance do I need in Florida, you can more
2:35
easily capture that traffic, even though it's not a ton compared to car insurance, you're
2:40
going to hit a target market that's really trying to find answer to that
2:45
And I also explain in the blog post that when you do that, you also want to cluster keywords that are similar
2:49
So for this one, for example, how much car insurance do I need in Florida? there's also related keywords that you find when you're using the keyword research tool
2:57
my favorite is Mangles KW Finder but you can use Ahrefs or SEMRush or any of the other ones
3:03
but you want to basically create keyword clusters for that same page so instead of just talking
3:09
about how much car insurance do I need for Florida you can also put how does car insurance
3:14
work in Florida and Florida car insurance rates by county so now when you write that content you're
3:20
answering several queries that people are wondering about. And so people that want to
3:25
know about car insurance in Florida, they're going to want to know how it works. And they're also going to want to know what the rates are by county. And if you're doing affiliate marketing
3:33
or maybe you have a Florida car insurance company or work with one, that's essentially going to get
3:39
a very targeted customer who's going to read that content and probably produce a sale. And so you
3:44
want to really focus on keywords that match the authority level of your site. And this is the
3:49
type of thing that I'm explaining that can work for you to your advantage so that you can get
3:55
actually traction in Google without having to compete with so many other different people
4:01
And inside this post, I actually link to Backlinko, who's a very popular blogger
4:06
in this space for SEO, and he gives you a guide on how to choose those keywords. So be sure to
4:11
check that out. Another thing I want to mention is that once you find a keyword that you want to
4:16
rank for, or maybe you have a page that's not doing as well as you want it to, oftentimes what
4:22
you can do is you can find the secret for how to rank higher on Google by just examining the top
4:26
competitors who rank for that keyword right now. And I do this all the time. So every piece of
4:31
content that I write for my blog and for my affiliate sites, I do this same strategy
4:36
Essentially what you do is you type your keyword into Google, and then you look at the top three to
4:41
five ranking pages. And right there, Google's essentially giving you the answer of what content
4:46
it wants to rank high for that term. So basically what you do is you type that keyword in
4:53
and then when you look at these different pages that are already ranking, look at the page titles
4:58
that are being displayed in the Google SERP. You're going to notice that a lot of them are probably pretty similar They got the same words maybe the same order et cetera And you also want open each one in a different browser tab and start examining the content on the page and then start taking notes on what you see Start looking at the H1 page titles Also start looking at the different H2s and H3s on the page and see what content are they including what sections and what are they talking about
5:26
And then you also want to do things like count the number of images on the page. Are they using tables? Are there charts? Are there graphs? Is there video
5:33
You know, just different things. What you're going to find out is most of those top ranking pages often have the same type of content in the same order and have the same type of things that they're showing to the visitor
5:44
And so Google is rewarding that. So you can essentially just find the answer for how you should write and structure your content by just looking at Google
5:51
And like I said, if you look at any blog post on my site, you're going to see that I'm doing that
5:55
So every key term that I want to rank for, I first look at my competitors. I find out, hey, what do they have that I need to include
6:02
and then essentially what I do is I end up combining all the information from those top
6:07
ranking pages into my content and so my content ends up being longer and it ends up being more
6:13
in-depth and includes everything that those top pages have. So by the end of the day when I'm
6:17
doing my blog post it's the best of the best and so that's my best advice for you here when you
6:23
want to rank higher in Google is to do that type of strategy and that's not something that a lot of
6:27
people are talking about. They basically will just sit there and tell you oh use keywords
6:31
words, do this, do that. But that's really the strategy that's working these days. And this is
6:35
the way that you want to approach your content. Something else I want to talk about is I mentioned
6:42
here, you can target featured snippets. That's the way that you can rank in the zero position
6:46
It's not very hard to do. Income School has a video that shows you a pretty good trick for doing
6:51
that. I mentioned that on the blog. And then also Steve Toth, which is a popular guy in the SEO
6:56
space, he gives you this neat trick on how you can use Google Docs to actually get predictive
7:01
text to actually have Google help you find out how to write that feature snippet. So go ahead
7:07
and check that out if you want to learn more about that. A couple of other things I want to talk
7:12
about is let's say that you have a page that's ranking in Google for a term, but you want it to
7:20
basically rank for more terms. And I do this all the time on my sites. What you can do is basically
7:26
you can open up that page in Search Console, and hopefully you already have that attached to your
7:30
site. And what you can do is you can find keywords that your site is ranking for that you're not
7:36
actually using on the page. So essentially, Google is aligning your content with a set of keywords
7:43
that it thinks you should rank for. And if you open up Search Console, you'll actually look at
7:49
the Performance tab. In the middle of the screen, you can click on a new button, choose Page
7:53
and then you can filter that information by the URL and then you can find the queries
7:59
I give the exact steps in the blog post. But essentially you're going to find these queries and you're going to sort it by impressions
8:05
And then you're going to find out which ones have the lowest ranks or maybe they're on page two or page three
8:10
And what you want to do is you want to make note of what those keywords are and then you essentially just want to take those keywords and add them into your post about three to four times
8:19
So now what you've done is you've given a clear signal to Google that, hey, you think I should be ranking for these keywords, and you're showing me that in console
8:27
Now I put them on the page, you're now giving a stronger signal, and Google will start to raise
8:31
you in the ranks for those keywords because you're solidifying what they think you should
8:35
be ranking for. So that's a tip I use all the time with content that I've written and published
8:40
and it's a couple months old. I go back into console. I find out what are the things Google
8:45
thinks it should rank for, and then I just add them to the page. And now I'm expanding the breadth
8:50
of that content for ranking higher for more keywords. Another thing I want to share here is
8:58
that you can also use console and things like that to kind of build on your topical authority
9:06
And this is secret number seven on the blog post. And what I mean by this is that if you look at
9:12
your console, you're going to find that Google tends to favor your site for certain keywords
9:17
And I give an example here about, let's say I was looking for, I searched for the phrase, how to choose a tent for camping
9:25
And one of the top sites that ranks for that is REI, which is an outdoor adventure company
9:31
And when you investigate their site a little bit further, you're going to find out that REI has more than 300 pages related to camping equipment on their website
9:43
Now compare that to a site like TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor has information about camping, but they don't focus on camping equipment
9:53
They only focus on destinations. So here's a place you can go camping in Virginia, where I'm from, or Idaho or whatever
10:01
It doesn't matter. They're going to give you location data. So the reason I mention that is because let's say you have a site like REI, or no, let's
10:11
say you have a site like TripAdvisor, and you want to write a post about how to choose
10:15
tent for camping. Well, if you write that post, the fact is, it probably won't rank
10:19
as high as REI who is basically the authority on camping equipment And what I mean by that is that you just don have enough content supporting that idea or that topic
10:32
And so when you look at Search Console, you can actually see the different words and keywords
10:36
that Google already thinks you're an authority in, and you should write more content of that nature
10:41
So, for example, with REI, they can keep writing more content about how to choose a temp for camping
10:46
how to choose camping equipment, how to choose sleeping bags, etc., etc
10:53
But for TripAdvisor, if your site's more of like a travel destination site
10:58
you're going to want to do something like best places for camping, where to camp in Virginia, etc., etc., etc
11:05
So you're capitalizing on the topical authority that your site is already ranking for
11:10
and Google thinks that you should rank for. So basically, you don't want to make it harder on yourself
11:15
You just want to go with the flow and choose the things that Google prefers you for
11:22
And I do this on my affiliate sites all the time. When I build them, I essentially build a ton of content
11:27
And then I start to find out, hey, this is the actual area of where Google is preferring me
11:32
And instead of spending time on these other articles that have X, Y, Z, I'm actually going to work on ABC because I'm already getting traction for those
11:40
I'm just going to keep doing what's working. and so I'm spending my time and resources on content that's going to be easier to rank
11:47
I'm not going to waste my time on this other stuff over here that's not working. So I want you to use that tip if you've got a site that's a niche site of some sort
11:54
or you're just trying to get easier, faster rankings. Just focus on the content that's already working and just start building out from there
12:03
Let's see, a couple other tips that I want to share with you. Also, in the blog post, I go through every area on the page
12:10
where you should be putting your target keyword because just finding good target keywords to focus
12:15
on is the first part of the strategy and then yzing your competitors to know what kind of
12:19
content to write but there's certain places on the page that you should be putting those keywords
12:24
so i've got multiple secrets on that i talk about putting it in the title tag the meta description
12:31
the url and the h1 tag h2 h3 images etc etc so be sure to check out the blog post for that full list
12:38
it would just take too long to explain all those things in this video. Let's see
12:43
What else can I tell you about this blog post to help give you some actual tips you can use right now
12:49
Let's see. Let's see. Oh, here's a good one. If you don't have an author attributed to your web pages, then you need to do so now
13:02
Because in 2013, Google published a set of quality rater guidelines. And what that does is it helps Google essentially determine what webpages it should rank high for certain terms based on what's called EAT, which stands for expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness
13:23
And the guiding principles for this is that these human raters will rate webpages, which then evaluates the effectiveness to help the algorithm do a better job at ranking pages
13:33
and one of the criteria that is part of that is does the page have an author and can you tell who
13:43
is responsible for this content because what happens is if you go to a web page and it sounds
13:49
it looks a lot of good information but there's nobody attached to it as an author you know that
13:54
just kind of screams this may or may not be fake you know and when it comes to providing value and
14:00
internet, Google wants to make sure it's providing legitimate answers to people's queries. And one of
14:05
the easiest ways to do that is to attribute the content to a dedicated author. So I've seen this
14:11
on myself with some of my affiliate sites is I didn't have any authors on any of the pages. I just
14:16
wrote the content, hit publish. And I wasn't doing the best with some of my rankings over time
14:21
they started to slip. And so what I did is I ended up putting the authors on there and started
14:27
creating bios by giving them a byline. So as soon as you get to the page, you'll see the date that
14:31
it was published. You'll see the author byline. And then at the bottom of that, you'll see a bio
14:35
of that author. And now I've attributed some type of authority writer to that content so that I can
14:42
show that this has truly been written by someone who's a professional in their field. And then what
14:47
you want to do is when you do that, you also want to have a bio page for that person. So the person
14:52
reads the content, they see who wrote it, then they're going to be able to click on that person's
14:56
name to then go to their bio and see, oh, this is a little bit about them. Here's their expertise
15:02
and here's some more content that they've written on the page. And if that person has written other
15:07
places on other sites, then you want to link to that too. Essentially, you're just showing Google
15:11
hey, this is a real legitimate person that's actually attributed to this work, and they're
15:15
someone that you can trust. And I explained a little bit more about that on the blog post
15:21
And I also mentioned that you also want to provide a publication date, because Google in 2011
15:26
11 released this part of their algorithm called the Google Freshness Update
15:31
And what this means is that there certain queries out there where it important to show content in Google that fresh And so I going to give you a perfect example of this And if you don have the publication date this can harm your rankings
15:46
And what I mean by this is that on this one site, I wrote content where I was ranking basically
15:53
number two for this keyword for a long time, probably a year or more. And as soon as COVID hit
15:58
that page tanked. And I thought, huh, that was strange. Why would I be considered the best for
16:04
this keyword for such a long time, and all of a sudden, now I'm not. Well, what I discovered is
16:09
that the pages that started ranking above me were news sites and different sites that were now
16:13
talking about this product. And what I found out was that the Google query deserves freshness
16:22
QDF, part of the algorithm started to kick in for this query because it was important. It was a hot
16:26
topic. New information was coming out about this thing and related to COVID, et cetera, and how is
16:33
it going to affect the coronavirus, et cetera? And so my content didn't have that publication date
16:38
and also didn't have the latest information that people were talking about. And so once I figured
16:45
that out, I added that information into the page. It took me probably about two months because I
16:50
wasn't really tracking that page as well as I should have. But after that, I added that information
16:53
and I looked at the, again, I did the competitive research. I looked at the top pages that were
16:57
ranking. I saw, hey, they have a publication date and they're talking about these things related to
17:02
COVID, I added them into the page, and almost within a week, boom, I got back to page one
17:08
And so that's just a pure example of how you got to take in consideration all the aspects of
17:14
Google's ranking algorithm for your pages so that you can make sure that you stay at the top of
17:19
Google when you have those positions, and you can raise in the ranks if you don't have them already
17:24
So be sure to add in authors every page for credibility and add a publication date because
17:29
you never know which page on your sites that query deserves freshness. Part of the algorithm
17:33
is going to kick in like I did, and you may lose some of your rankings if you don't have it
17:37
So those are just two simple things you can do right now to take advantage of that
17:44
What else do I want to talk about? I'll talk about one last tip. This is a good one. I want to talk about this internal 301 redirect tip, which is secret number
17:55
25. What I mean here is that sometimes you have pages on your site that end up generating a lot
18:05
of good backlinks, but over time, the content just kind of gets stale or outdated. A perfect
18:11
example of this is, let's say, a new site. They publish something about this event. It gets a lot
18:16
of buzz. They get a lot of traffic to that page. If you check it in the backlink checker, it's got
18:21
a lot of good backlinks. Well, over time, that page doesn't really matter anymore, but then
18:25
another page that's kind of on the same topic you write comes up and you want that page to rank
18:29
higher. And maybe it's a more evergreen type of content that you want to rank high forever
18:34
Well, you can use this trick called the internal 301 redirect trick where you essentially unpublish
18:39
that first page and then you use a 301 redirect to redirect that URL to the new page. So essentially
18:45
what you're doing is you're taking all that link juice that's going to the old page and pushing it
18:50
to the new page. And that's now going to give some more, some signals that this is a more
18:55
important page and more powerful. And you're essentially taking and redirecting that backlink
19:00
juice to the new page. And so it makes it easier because you don't have to build as many backlinks
19:05
to that page by just using that 301 redirect trick. And a way I've used that in the past was
19:11
I had this article where I interviewed a lot of top experts in my field for this product I was
19:17
promoting. And it was just a typical, you know, expert roundup where I had like 30 companies
19:22
people say, Hey, what is your best advice for this? Now, when I first published that post
19:26
it was awesome. You know, I got a lot of traction on social media, people shared it
19:30
it had a lot of traffic, but then over time it just kind of dwindled out and I didn't really push it anymore. Well, I had all these backlinks, you know, from these sites to this piece of
19:38
content that were from professional resources. I thought, man, I don't just want to give all
19:43
that stuff up. So what I did is I wrote a fresh piece of content related around the same topic
19:47
And then I just deleted that page and redirected that URL to the new page and essentially just got that instant boost for backlinks and authority on that page
19:58
So that's not a trick that I really see anyone else sharing. So I wanted to make sure that I ended this video with that trick for you to try
20:05
If you have an existing site and you have content where you can do that type of thing
20:10
I hope that you're finding the information in this video and the ones that I'm producing valuable
