A sponsored link is a hyperlink that has been paid for by a third party to act as an advertisement on a web page. Sponsor links arelabeled with the rel=”sponsored” attribute to inform search engine crawlers of the monetary relationship between the participating sites.
Sponsored links are a type of nofollow link that prevents the transfer of link equity between two websites. Search engine guidelines require website owners to tag all paid links with the sponsored HTML attribute. Otherwise, a manual or algorithmic penalty can be applied to the site.
