Search Engine Ranking Definition & Meaning

What Is Search Engine Ranking?

Search engine ranking is the position a web page ranks in the search engine results pages for a target keyword. Search engine rankings are determined by algorithm systems that use mathematical calculations to determine the popularity, importance, and relevance web pages have to search queries.

The goal for every website is to increase its search engine ranking positions for the keywords that matter most for the business. This is performed by using search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to increase the relevance and trust of the target keyword phrases.

Website owners and SEO specialists track search engine ranking positions with tools called keyword rank trackers to analyze their SEO campaigns. A rank tracker will monitor the daily ranking position for each tracked keyword so the website administrator knows if the search engine rankings are going up or down or staying the same.
