Schema Markup Definition & Meaning

What Is A Schema Markup?

Schema Markup is a form of microdata that helps search engines better understand the information on a website. It’s often confused with the SEO terminology for Structured Data.

Schema Markup only presents the data in a way search engines can understand, while the term Structured Data refers to the website’s actual data. There are three formats of Schema Markup that are common in search engines: JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa.

The use of Schema Markup is by no means mandatory, but using it can improve a website’s appearance and visibility in the search engine results pages, which can lead to higher click-through rates and relevance to search queries.
