Hey, it's Steven with SEO Chatter, and today I'm going to talk about a blog post I wrote called
0:04
How Many Keywords Per Page for SEO should you focus on? And if you've ever wondered, how many
0:09
keywords should you put on the page, should you stick to a certain keyword density, or should you
0:15
create a new web page for every keyword you want to rank for, then this video can help
0:20
What I'm going to do is I'm going to pull the highlights out of this post. If you want to read it
0:23
you can click on the link in the description below, but you will walk away from this video with actionable
0:28
tips on how many keywords you should focus on per page so that you can get higher rankings
0:34
in Google because there are some standard practices that you should follow in this area
0:40
So what I want to first talk about is how many keywords can a page rank for? And that's a good
0:46
question. According to a study done by ATREFs, they looked at this exact topic and they reported
0:53
that it looks like the average number one ranking page will also rank
0:58
in the top 10 search results for nearly 1,000 other relevant keywords
1:04
Now, the medium value is about 400 keywords. And then the lower the ranking page it is, they tend to rank for less keywords
1:13
So the more keywords you can rank higher for on Google, the broader range of keywords you
1:20
will rank for in general. So you can maybe rank for 400 to 1,000 additional keywords if you're just ranking
1:27
for one really good one. on Google. And the reason this is the case is because there's so many different what's called long tail keywords
1:35
And I have another video on my channel that talks about this. A long tail keyword is one that's about five words or more within a keyword phrase
1:44
And then there's middle tail keywords which are about three to four words and short tail keywords which are between one and two words long
1:50
And so if you can rank for a short or medium tail, middle tail keyword, you can generally rank
1:56
for longer tail keywords as well. so that pool just gets bigger and bigger and bigger
2:00
And so the next thing we can talk about is how many keywords should you focus on per page
2:08
Well, my opinion is that you should focus each page at a bare minimum two to three keywords on that page
2:16
And the reason that is because that's just enough to be able to give you a good cluster of
2:21
keywords that can then start to grab other keywords that are related so you can get those
2:27
additional rankings. Now, keep in mind that the shorter your content is, the less keywords
2:33
you can focus on, and the longer your content is, the more keywords you can focus on
2:37
So I write in the blog post that if you were to write a 500-word article, you can easily
2:42
optimize that page for two to three keywords without any problems. But if you try to stuff
2:47
in five, six, seven keywords, it's just going to start to sound unnatural and just not make
2:52
sense, and it could start to become keyword stuffing. Now, if you wrote an article
2:57
that 2 words or longer it easy to put in five six seven keywords Because you have more spots to put those keywords in and the content longer in that you can just write more naturally and have those keywords sprinkled through without them being just forced in there
3:14
So just remember that the more keywords you can focus on, the more chances your pages can rank in search engines
3:20
And this is important because Shane Barker, and I linked to this in the post
3:24
into the post, was able to rank his website for 3,461 keywords on the first page of Google
3:32
just by using two to three related keywords on each page. So if that doesn't convince you
3:39
I'm not sure what will, you know. So basically every keyword, I'm sorry, every page should have
3:45
at least two to three keywords that you're focusing on so you can boost the overall ranking
3:50
power of that page and your site. So the next thing I want to talk about is, should I use the same keywords on every page
4:00
And this is an important topic because a lot of new people to digital marketing and blogging think
4:06
okay, I found a good keyword, I'm getting traffic, how about I just keep using on every page
4:11
And then maybe I can become the most authoritative source for that
4:16
So I have all these pages on the same keyword. Well, that's actually going to backfire on you because there's this thing called keyword cannibalization
4:22
And what that means is you have more than one page on your site focusing on the same exact
4:28
keyword. And what happens there is Google gets confused and it thinks, oh, should I rank this page
4:34
for that keyword or should I rank this page for that keyword? I don't know. I'm having a hard time
4:39
And so Google might start to bounce back and forth. And I've seen that happen on my own sites
4:45
I have some affiliate sites. And, you know, I'm ranking well for one keyword for a long time
4:49
And then I write a new piece of content. And then for some reason, content's now getting replaced with that and then my keyword rankings drop and that's because
4:57
I made a mistake and I actually used that initial keyword too many times in the page and so I just
5:03
have to strip it out and then Google figures it out and realizes oh let's go back and rank that other
5:08
page back where it was there's no more confusion so you want to make sure that whenever you're
5:13
writing new pieces of content the best thing to do is just keep a log you know so for example
5:18
I'm writing this post on how many keywords per page for SEO I wrote
5:22
that down so I know that when I write a new piece of content I'm not going to focus on
5:26
this topic ever again. This is the one page of my site that focuses on it. And because I'm
5:31
doing that I'm not going to suffer keyword cannibalization. And so you should do that too
5:38
Now another question people have is, okay that's all good, but what about my home page
5:42
How many keywords should be on a home page? Well, the homepage is just like any other page
5:47
in your site. So it should have a bare minimum of two to three keywords that you're
5:52
focusing on for the home page and if your home page can be longer then you can
5:57
focus on five or six keywords or more now a lot of people tend to make their home pages just like a brochure just a quick way to get to other parts of the site And they say well how can I put the keywords on there and focus on more
6:11
Well, an easy way to do that is you can have all that good information, but at the very bottom, you know, just start writing some content, longer content
6:18
Fill that page with some words. And when you do that, you can have different areas where you can actually start putting in your keywords
6:24
And that's how I build all my sites when I build affiliate sites. The home page, the top half, is essentially just the good visual content to get people to the buying guides and different helpful material
6:36
But then I load the bottom half of that page with just, you know, information about the site, what you can find here, etc., etc., etc
6:43
You know, most often people aren't even going to read that stuff. And I'm only doing that just so I can put more keywords in the page in specific areas that I know Google wants to see to rank me higher for those keywords
6:55
So you can do that. focused on at least two to three keywords for the homepage and try to go longer if you can add
7:01
some more information to the page. So that leads us to the next question, which is, can you have too many keywords
7:08
Are there too many keywords you can have on one page? Well, yes, in the sense that you can do what's called keyword stuffing
7:15
If you find a good keyword, you're right about it, and you just keep using it over and over
7:19
and over and over again, that can be too many keywords on the page. and then you may get penalized by Google, which has been done in the past, which is what they
7:29
have in their algorithm now. So I have an example here from Google that says, you know, imagine you were trying to sell
7:36
cigar humidifiers, or no, I'm sorry, cigar humidors. And you wrote, we sell custom cigar humidors
7:45
Our custom cigar humidors are handmade. If you're thinking and buying a custom cigar humidator, please contact your custom cigar
7:52
human or specialist dad. Blah, blah, blah, blah. So see how they're just repeating that word over and over and over
7:57
So you can't have too many of one keyword on the page. But when it comes to just general keywords, you know, like I was saying
8:04
if you have a long piece of content with five or six keywords you're targeting, you know, that's not too much
8:09
You can actually increase the range of your keywords and target different
8:13
relevant ones that pertain to the same thing. So it's more about just broadening your reach versus just repeating the same keyword over
8:20
and over again. So with that said, people wonder, what is the ideal keyword density
8:27
Well, there's some SEO experts out there that say, you know, one to two percent keyword density is good to follow
8:34
And what that means is for every 100 words on the page, you have your keyword once
8:39
It's one to two times. And if you do that, you should generally be safe
8:43
Well, page one power SEO agency considers this keyword density to be the worst metric for SEO ever, and I tend to agree
8:51
because at the end of the day, you know, keyword density doesn't matter because what really matters is if you put your keywords in the right spot on the page
9:01
And I have other videos on my channel and on the blog that teach you those on page optimization strategies So just look for those so you can get those tips so you know where to put your keywords and that better because you know just repeating
9:14
your keyword once every hundred words isn't really going to do the trick anymore for google it's too
9:19
smart that search engine has evolved over time years ago that did work and then google realized people
9:25
were manipulating that and they changed their algorithms so it doesn't work that way anymore
9:29
So what you want to do is you just want to use the keyword in the specific spots on the page for good on page SEO
9:36
And also, if you have any worries, you can just go to Google, search for your target keyword, and then open up the competing pages and actually do a Control F and look for that keyword on their page and just see how many times that they've used it
9:52
I've written a couple blog posts on my page on my site where I've included the actual exact match keyword 12 to 14,000
9:59
times in the content. And you might think, whoa, that sounds like a lot. That's keyword stuffing
10:04
Well, when I looked at the competitors, they were doing the same thing. So I knew that I was
10:08
safe to do so. But then there's other blog posts where I do that same process. I look at my
10:12
competitors and I search for that word on their site. And I see they're maybe using it two to three
10:17
times. And I know, oh, I can't go above maybe two or three times. Because if I do, for this
10:23
particular page, it might be considered keyword stuffing. And then for this to make more sense
10:29
you know, just think about, you know, if you're like if I were to write a piece of content about
10:33
you know, the best SEO tools that you can use for keyword research, you know, I'm going to use
10:38
the word SEO tool in that piece of content over and over and over and over again. I mean
10:43
I may use it a hundred times because how am I going to refer to an SEO tool without saying
10:47
SEO tool? So at that point, keyword density is just thrown out the window. You know, I'm probably
10:52
going to be at like 50%, you know, 40%, 30% density at that point
10:57
And you might think that doesn't make sense, you know, that's too optimized. You've got to find other ways to say SEO tool, maybe SEO program, SEO software, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera
11:05
Well, as I said, it just doesn't work that way. Google is smart enough to know. Is each, are you trying to manipulate the search engine this way or not
11:12
So, like I said, just focus on putting your keywords in the right on-page spots
11:17
And if you do that, you're going to do well. So essentially that covers the broad topic of this question about how many keywords per page
11:27
